Historic Island Inn Restored By Community Becomes Public Cultural Space
Times of India - India · india
A 125-year-old landmark on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, has been transformed from the former Island Inn into a public cultural and community space named Ocracoke Commons. Community-led restoration efforts began in December 2017 after residents approached the Ocracoke Preservation Society to purchase the property, saving it from potential redevelopment. The project faced challenges including hurricane damage and pandemic delays. The building, originally constructed in 1901, has been raised to mitigate flooding risk and will now host cultural programs, educational activities, and community meetings.
