Railways Liable for Passenger Belongings Theft From AC Coach

Times of India · india

Uttarakhand's consumer commission has ruled the Railways liable for theft from a reserved AC coach, citing negligence for failing to prevent unauthorized entry. The commission upheld a district panel's decision, ordering the Railways to pay Rs 37,222 with 7% annual interest and Rs 10,000 in litigation costs. This ruling stems from a 2018 incident where a passenger's bag was stolen from the Mewar Express near Mathura. The commission found the Railways failed to provide evidence refuting claims that coach doors were left unlocked, enabling the theft.
