Bastar Dussehra's 6-Century-Old Chariot Tradition Continues in Jagdalpur

Times of India · spirituality

The 75-day Bastar Dussehra festival in Jagdalpur has entered a significant phase with the Phool Rath procession, continuing a tradition over six centuries old. Hundreds of villagers pulled a towering wooden chariot carrying the ceremonial insignia of Maa Danteshwari through the city. Unlike other Dussehra celebrations, this festival focuses on the goddess and tribal participation, eschewing Ravana effigies. The flower-decked chariot will proceed daily, leading up to major rituals including the Muria Darbar, which may be attended by President Droupadi Murmu.
