Eritrea has cut off diplomatic relations with Ethiopia, escalating a long-simmering conflict rooted in territorial disputes and mutual accusations of interference. This move follows Ethiopia's announcement to close its embassy in Asmara and expel Eritrean diplomats. Fighting has also flared in northern Ethiopia between federal troops and an opposition alliance, which Addis Ababa accuses Eritrea of backing.
