Wayanad Panchayat Uses Community Weather Data To Demand Drought Status

The Hindu · india

A community-based weather monitoring system in Wayanad, Kerala, has recorded a significant 47% deficit in southwest monsoon rainfall. This data has prompted the Thirunelly grama panchayat to urge the state government to declare the area severely drought-hit. The network, comprising rain gauges and trained volunteers, tracks hyperlocal rainfall variations and helps plan interventions. The lack of rain has severely impacted paddy cultivation and other crops, leading to water shortages. The India Meteorological Department's station in Wayanad also recorded a substantial rainfall deficit.
