Florida Restores 44 Miles of Kissimmee River Channel

Hindustan Times · environment

Florida has completed a significant restoration project aimed at re-establishing the natural flow of the Kissimmee River. The project, which began in 1999, involved filling 22 miles of a flood-control canal and reconnecting 44 miles of the historic river channel. This effort has successfully restored approximately 20,000 acres of wetlands and revitalized the river's floodplain ecosystem. Scientists are continuing to monitor the river's response to these changes, observing improvements in water flow, vegetation, and wildlife habitats.
