Bengal Plans Ambitious Project To Change Ganga River Course

Times of India · environment

The West Bengal government, with central assistance, is planning a major project to redirect the Ganga river in Malda back to its original course. The Ganga has shifted six kilometers left in 50 years, bringing it only 750 meters from the Fulahar river. This proximity risks a catastrophic flood if the rivers merge, potentially inundating the district and severing north-south Bengal connectivity. A pilot project to excavate a new channel will cost ₹50 crore and must be completed before the next monsoon.
