US Stocks Rise on Weak Jobs Data, Lowering Rate Hike Bets
Economic Times Markets · stocks
US stocks closed higher on Friday, with the Nasdaq Composite gaining 1.19% and the S&P 500 rising 0.76%. A weaker-than-expected jobs report, showing only 29,000 nonfarm payroll additions, significantly reduced expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month. Traders now see a lower probability of a rate increase at the Fed's late-October meeting. Rate-sensitive shares advanced, and sectors like real estate and consumer discretionary saw gains. Despite the day's rise, the Dow and S&P 500 recorded their fourth weekly decline in five weeks.
