The Hindu · india
Two veteran craftsmen, Moideenkutty and Mohammedkutty, both known as Kunhapputty, have been honoured in Malappuram, Keralam, for their work in the traditional timber sawing trade. This craft, which involved two people operating a long saw to cut giant trees into planks, is now fading due to mechanisation. The two men began their careers earning just 25 paise a day and recalled transporting timber by handcart across rivers. Re-Echo, a cultural organisation, felicitated them as part of an initiative to preserve local history and recognise their contribution to a vanishing trade.
