American Lantana, Once a Garden Shrub, Now Threatens India's Forests

Hindustan Times · environment

Introduced to India as an ornamental shrub in the early 1800s, the American lantana plant now covers over 13 million hectares and poses a significant threat to India's forest ecosystems. A study examining its impact on dry forests in Madhya Pradesh found that lantana-infested areas had fewer native plant species compared to areas without the invasive shrub. Lantana thrives in stressed forests, outcompeting native plants through chemical secretions and rapid spread via birds.
