A chance encounter with a cat's reflective eyes on a dark night in 1933 inspired Percy Shaw to invent reflective road studs, commonly known as 'cat's eyes'. Though not directly mimicking a cat's eye structure, his design used glass beads to replicate the light reflection. Real cat eyes possess a 'tapetum lucidum' layer behind the retina, which reflects light, enhancing night vision and aiding hunting. This biological feature acts like a mirror, allowing photoreceptors to capture light twice, making eyes appear to glow intensely in low light.
