Supreme Court Demands Bank Liability For Digital Arrest Fraud Losses

Hindustan Times · business

The Supreme Court has mandated that banks must compensate victims of digital arrest frauds if the crime results from institutional failure. The court also called for prosecuting bank officials found colluding with fraudsters. This directive comes amid a surge in such frauds, with over 21,928 complaints involving ₹647 crore reported in eight months. Current RBI compensation rules offer limited relief, capping payouts at ₹25,000. The apex court emphasized that banks can recover their losses through existing laws, while victims currently lack similar recourse, demanding stricter accountability.
