Law of the Sea Used To Inspect Russian Oil Tankers
Al Jazeera · world
Western allies are increasingly using international law to enforce sanctions on Russian oil. For the first time this year, countries have boarded and inspected vessels under the Law of the Sea, aiming to disrupt Russia's oil exports. This strategy targets the "shadow fleet" of tankers not insured by Western institutions, which often bypass regulations. Article 110 of UNCLOS provides a legal basis for these inspections, reducing Russia's ability to circumvent sanctions imposed since 2022.
