Florida is experiencing its largest dengue outbreak in decades, with over 250 locally acquired cases reported this year, primarily in Hillsborough County. This marks the most cases in a calendar year for any continental U.S. state since at least the 1940s, surpassing Florida's previous record from 2023. Local emergencies have been declared, and mosquito control efforts are intensifying. Dengue, a virus spread by mosquitoes, can cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in rare cases, bleeding and death. One death has been reported this year.
