Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche: The Only Black Passenger Aboard the Titanic

Joseph Philippe Lemercier Laroche, a 25-year-old Haitian man, was the only documented Black passenger on the ill-fated maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic in April 1912. He was a grandson of Haiti's first emperor and had traveled to France to study engineering. Laroche's story was largely forgotten for decades until sociologist Dr. Carlette Norwood discovered it during a museum visit. Norwood has since researched his life, written a play about him, and aims to bring his complex journey to light.
