ASI Uses GPR Survey to Revive Study of Ujjain's Massive Vaishya Tekri Stupa
Times of India · interesting
ASI, along with state archaeology and MANIT, has conducted a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey at Ujjain's Vaishya Tekri mound. This non-invasive technique aims to map subsurface structures before potential excavation, reviving a study abandoned nearly 90 years ago due to a reported gas leak. A 1938-39 report described the stupa as potentially the largest known, with a diameter of 350 feet and a height of 100 feet, dating it to the Mauryan period. The Madhya Pradesh government is keen to advance this archaeological exploration.
