केंद्र सरकार ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट से पूछा है कि चीफ इलेक्शन कमिश्नर (CEC) की नियुक्ति करने वाली पैनल में भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश (CJI) का होना कितना ज़रूरी है। सरकार ने इस बात पर सवाल उठाया है और कहा है कि ऐसे नियुक्तियों में प्रधानमंत्री के फैसले लेने की शक्ति पर भरोसा किया जाना चाहिए।
