Coca-Cola's $5 Billion Costa Coffee Acquisition Fails To Meet Expectations

Business Standard · business

Coca-Cola's $5 billion acquisition of Costa Coffee, intended to penetrate the global coffee market, has fallen short of expectations. The company aimed to leverage its distribution network to expand Costa's reach with innovative products like "barista-in-a-box" machines. However, these machines proved complex for bottlers, and Costa struggled to compete in the ready-to-drink coffee market, particularly against PepsiCo and Starbucks' Frappuccino. The acquisition has largely resulted in Coca-Cola operating over 2,700 Costa shops concentrated in the UK and Ireland, with previous attempts to sell the brand proving unsuccessful.
