West Bengal Election Tribunal Faces Millions of Pending Appeals Six Months Later
BBC Hindi · politics
Six months after their establishment, 19 appellate tribunals in West Bengal have processed only 3.3% of the 38.31 lakh appeals filed against voter list exclusions. These appeals stem from the removal of 90.83 lakh names from the state's electoral roll prior to the recent assembly elections. A judge cited the sheer volume of cases and issues with the Election Commission's online portal as primary reasons for the delay. This backlog has left many, like former IAF officer Mohammad Shamim Akhtar, concerned about regaining their voting rights for years.
