India's Electricity Generation Surges 11% in Q2 2026-27

Times of India · environment

India's electricity generation increased by 11% year-on-year to 536 billion units in the second quarter of 2026-27, while peak power demand reached a record 270 GW, an 18% rise. Renewable energy generation, excluding large hydropower, surpassed 100 billion units for the first time, with solar and wind power showing significant growth. Despite the demand surge, coal-fired power plants operated below full capacity, indicating substantial unused potential within the existing fleet. Non-fossil fuel sources collectively contributed a record 177 billion units to the generation mix.
