Centre Advises Meta to Overhaul Facebook, Instagram Content Promotion Systems

India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued an advisory to Meta, urging a significant overhaul of content promotion systems on Facebook and Instagram. The ministry wants Meta to ensure recommendation algorithms do not disproportionately expose users to limited narratives and instead provide diverse, credible information. It also requires strengthening mechanisms for rapid identification and escalation of content that could cause public confusion or violence. The advisory emphasizes Meta's obligation to exercise due diligence under IT Rules, 2021, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

भारत के इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स और सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी मंत्रालय (MeitY) ने मेटा को एक सलाह जारी की है, जिसमें फेसबुक और इंस्टाग्राम पर कंटेंट प्रमोशन सिस्टम में बड़े सुधार का आग्रह किया गया है। मंत्रालय चाहता है कि मेटा यह सुनिश्चित करे कि रिकमेंडेशन एल्गोरिदम उपयोगकर्ताओं को सीमित नैरेटिव के प्रति असमान रूप से उजागर न करें और इसके बजाय विविध, विश्वसनीय जानकारी प्रदान करें। इसमें सार्वजनिक भ्रम या हिंसा पैदा करने वाली सामग्री की त्वरित पहचान और एस्केलेशन के लिए तंत्र को मजबूत करने की भी आवश्यकता है। सलाह आईटी रूल्स, 2021 के तहत मेटा के उचित परिश्रम का प्रयोग करने और कानून प्रवर्तन एजेंसियों के साथ सहयोग करने के दायित्व पर जोर देती है।
