Odisha Weavers Face Distress Amidst Low Puja Sales And Middlemen Exploitation
Times of India · business
Handloom weavers in Odisha's Kendrapada and Jajpur districts are reporting significant financial distress and low sales ahead of the puja season. They attribute their plight to exploitation by middlemen and cooperative societies, alongside a lack of procurement from government agencies like Boyanika and insufficient support from the state handloom department. Weavers are receiving substantially less than the market value for their products, with middlemen profiting significantly. This situation puts the livelihoods of thousands of weavers at risk as orders decline and agencies fail to purchase their goods.
