The Supreme Court has directed the West Bengal assembly speaker to decide disqualification petitions against 10 rebel TMC legislators by October 8. The apex court cited its 2020 ruling, which mandates speakers to act on such pleas within three months. These petitions were filed on July 8 by TMC leader Sohandeb Chattopadhyay against rival faction leader Ritabrata Banerjee and others. The court emphasized that the speaker acts as a tribunal in such matters and must adhere to the established timeline.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा के स्पीकर को 10 बागी TMC विधायकों के अयोग्यता याचिकाओं पर 8 अक्टूबर तक फैसला करने का निर्देश दिया है। शीर्ष अदालत ने अपने 2020 के फैसले का हवाला दिया, जिसमें स्पीकर को ऐसे याचिकाओं पर तीन महीने के भीतर कार्रवाई करने का आदेश है। ये याचिकाएं 8 जुलाई को TMC नेता Sohandeb Chattopadhyay ने प्रतिद्वंद्वी गुट के नेता Ritabrata Banerjee और अन्य के खिलाफ दायर की थीं। अदालत ने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि स्पीकर ऐसे मामलों में एक न्यायाधिकरण के रूप में कार्य करता है और स्थापित समय-सीमा का पालन करना चाहिए।
