Tamil Nadu's power utility, TNPDCL, has signed agreements to procure the most expensive power in its history to address a significant shortage. The discom will purchase 1,500 megawatts of round-the-clock power and an additional 2,000 megawatts for evening peak demand at rates ranging from Rs 31.99 to Rs 37 per unit. This comes as demand has surged unexpectedly, with peak demand reaching 20,000 MW, nearly 4,000 MW higher than usual. Officials cited a shortage from central generating stations and reduced wind power as reasons for the costly procurement.
