345-Million-Year-Old Fossil 'Lizzie' Reclassified From Reptile To Fish

Times of India · science

A 345-million-year-old Scottish fossil, nicknamed Lizzie, was long considered one of the earliest reptiles. Discovered in 1984 and described in 1990, its features suggested it was an early land-adapted amniote. However, new X-ray scans have revealed a primitive skull, internal gills, and a fish-like mouth with thousands of teeth. These findings indicate Lizzie was not a reptile but likely lived in or near water, belonging to a much more ancient lineage. This reclassification challenges previous understandings of early amniote evolution and traits associated with land adaptation.
