Tentacled Snake Tricks Fish Into Its Jaws Using Prey's Own Escape Reflex

Times of India · science

An aquatic tentacled snake has evolved a unique hunting strategy that exploits the natural escape reflex of fish. The snake, positioned with its body in a J-shape, makes a small movement that startles nearby fish, triggering their rapid C-start escape manoeuvre. This reflex, designed to help fish evade danger, often directs them straight towards the snake's waiting jaws. Research indicates this predictive hunting behaviour is largely innate, with natural selection favouring snakes whose nervous systems anticipate fish escape patterns.
