Retired EV Batteries Worth ₹1 Lakh Crore Goldmine

Retired electric vehicle batteries in India, currently hazardous waste, could yield minerals worth ₹1.01 lakh crore by FY2040-41, according to a CSEP working paper. The study estimates India could recover 573 kilotonnes of minerals from EV batteries between FY2026-27 and FY2040-41. This recycling potential offers a chance to build circularity into the EV system early on. Successful battery recycling can transform waste into a domestic resource, foster a new industry, and mitigate critical mineral supply shocks.
