Jain Ramayana Depicts Hanuman and Vanaras as Ascetic Monks
The Hindu · india
The Jain interpretation of the Ramayana offers a unique perspective on the vanaras, the monkey-like beings who aided Rama. Unlike the Hindu epic where they are divine beings with tails, Jain texts like the Paumachariya describe them as humans who mastered magic and flew in vimanas. Jain tradition further states that Rama, Sugriva, and Hanuman attained nirvana at the Mangi-Tungi peaks in Maharashtra, where ancient carvings depict these figures as ascetics.
