Sri Lanka Raises Judges Retirement Age

Sri Lanka's Parliament has passed the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, increasing the retirement age for Supreme Court judges from 65 to 67 and Court of Appeal judges from 63 to 65. The controversial amendment was approved with a two-thirds majority, despite strong opposition protests and concerns about judicial independence. Government officials stated the amendment aims to reform the judiciary and expedite justice delivery, addressing a backlog of over a million cases. However, opposition leaders argue it poses a threat to democracy and judicial autonomy.

श्रीलंका की संसद ने संविधान में 22वां संशोधन पास कर दिया है। इसके तहत सुप्रीम कोर्ट के जजों की रिटायरमेंट उम्र 65 से बढ़ाकर 67 और कोर्ट ऑफ अपील के जजों की 63 से बढ़ाकर 65 साल कर दी गई है। यह विवादास्पद संशोधन भारी विरोध के बावजूद दो-तिहाई बहुमत से पास हुआ। सरकार का कहना है कि इससे न्याय व्यवस्था सुधरेगी और लंबित मामलों का निपटारा जल्दी होगा। लेकिन विपक्ष का मानना है कि यह लोकतंत्र और न्यायपालिका की स्वतंत्रता के लिए खतरा है।
