Florida Cyber Firm Owner Charged With Defrauding Ransomware Victims

The owner of a Florida cybersecurity firm, MonsterCloud, is facing federal wire fraud charges for allegedly misleading ransomware victims. Zohar Pinhasi, 50, claimed his company had proprietary tools to decrypt data without paying hackers. Prosecutors allege MonsterCloud instead paid cybercriminals and charged clients significantly more for recovery services. Pinhasi reportedly collected over $19 million from clients while secretly paying over $8 million in ransom to hackers. One client was allegedly billed $150,000 after Pinhasi paid only $8,200 for a decryption key.
