Heartburn Medicine May Harm Vitamin B12, Magnesium

Hindustan Times · health

Proton pump inhibitors, commonly used for chronic heartburn and acidity, can disrupt the body's absorption of vitamin B12 and magnesium, according to physician Dr. Kunal Sood. These medications reduce stomach acid by blocking acid-producing pumps, which aids healing but can interfere with nutrient absorption. Prolonged use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, causing fatigue and nerve symptoms, and can also cause low magnesium levels. Individuals experiencing new symptoms while on these medications should seek medical attention.
