In 2009, NASA deliberately crashed a 5,000-pound rocket stage into the Cabeus crater near the Moon's south pole. This was part of the LCROSS mission, designed to find water ice in permanently shadowed lunar regions. The impact excavated a plume of dust and vapor, which the LCROSS spacecraft then analyzed. Instruments detected water vapor and ice, along with other volatile compounds, confirming water's presence on the Moon.
