Niti VC Defends UPI Charges, Cites Self-Sustainability

NITI Aayog vice chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri defended the Centre's decision to introduce a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on high-value UPI transactions. He stated businesses must become self-sustaining rather than rely on government subsidies, comparing it to a bee collecting honey gently. This personal view comes after the announcement of a 0.4% MDR on UPI payments over Rs 2,000 to merchants from October 15. Person-to-person and small merchant payments remain exempt.

नीति आयोग के उपाध्यक्ष अशोक कुमार लाहिड़ी ने ऊंचे मूल्य वाले UPI लेनदेन पर मर्चेंट डिस्काउंट रेट (MDR) लागू करने के केंद्र के फैसले का बचाव किया। उन्होंने कहा कि व्यवसायों को सरकारी सब्सिडी पर निर्भर रहने के बजाय आत्मनिर्भर बनना चाहिए, जिसकी तुलना उन्होंने मधुमक्खी द्वारा धीरे-धीरे शहद इकट्ठा करने से की। यह व्यक्तिगत राय 15 अक्टूबर से 2,000 रुपये से अधिक के UPI भुगतानों पर व्यापारियों के लिए 0.4% MDR की घोषणा के बाद आई है।
