Philippine Village Uses Bamboo, Oyster Shells For Coastal Defence

Times of India · environment

Residents of Pamarawan, a Philippine fishing village, have developed a nature-based coastal defence system using bamboo poles, oyster shells, and coconut husks. This innovative approach aims to weaken incoming waves, trap sediment, and encourage mangrove growth, restoring marine habitats. Local officials report that the village has experienced no flooding for nearly two years since the project's inception. This natural defence has proven more effective than a previous concrete breakwater, protecting homes from storm surges and preventing inundation that affected neighbouring communities.
