Scientists Discover New Yak-Like Ice Age Mammal in Siberian Cave

Hindustan Times · science

Scientists have identified a previously unknown Ice Age mammal, provisionally named "Yak X," through ancient DNA analysis of bone fragments found in Siberia's Denisova Cave. The animal, closely related to modern yaks, diverged from their ancestors approximately 400,000 years ago. Researchers believe Yak X likely resembled a modern yak and experienced a population decline during the Ice Age before its extinction. This discovery adds to the understanding of the diverse mammal populations that coexisted with extinct human lineages like the Denisovans in the region.
