French health authorities have confirmed the first-ever detection of the Shamonda virus in a human, a virus previously known to affect livestock. The severely immunocompromised patient, who was undergoing treatment for a serious illness, died in Lyon in early October. The leading hypothesis suggests the patient contracted the virus through an insect bite in eastern France.
