New World Screwworm Detected in Arizona Dog, Outbreak Accelerates
Mint · health
New World screwworm has been detected in Arizona for the first time, identified in a dog in Cochise County, as the parasite's spread accelerates. The US Department of Agriculture confirmed the infection, noting a recent increase in cases, particularly in New Mexico. A total of 71 cases have been reported in the US since the outbreak began in June, with 18 currently active. The parasitic fly's larvae burrow into animal wounds and can be deadly to livestock if untreated, raising concerns for cattle ranchers.
