The Kerala Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Union government to withdraw its decision to levy Merchant Discount Rates (MDR) on UPI transactions exceeding ₹2,000. The resolution, moved by CPI MLA K. Rajan and supported by the ruling UDF, argues that this move turns a free digital service into a profit-making mechanism, potentially benefiting foreign companies. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated the levy would be like a new tax, increasing business costs and ultimately affecting consumers.
