China Prefers Developing Status Over High-Income Classification
Hindustan Times · business
China is nearing the World Bank's high-income country classification but prefers to remain in the "developing" category. This status allows Beijing to champion Global South nations and avoid contributing to some global climate funds. Despite its economic growth, China's leader Xi Jinping stated in 2024 that the country will always be part of the developing world. The World Bank's definition of high-income is based on gross national income per capita, which China is projected to surpass for 2026.
