Times of India · environment

Despite local efforts to curb illegal sand mining in Curtorim, the activity persists. On Wednesday, police seized a truck and arrested its driver for transporting illegally extracted sand. This follows a similar incident where locals intercepted eight trucks. Residents report that sand mining has been ongoing for years, providing a lucrative business for the unemployed and utilizing idle iron ore trucks. They also complain of disturbances and structural damage to homes due to the mining operations, demanding sustained police action.
