Supreme Court Rules Against Backward Quota Claims For Converts

Mint · top

The Supreme Court has ruled that individuals converting from Hinduism to Islam cannot claim 'backward' quota benefits based on their previous social standing. The court upheld a Madras High Court order, dismissing the Tamil Nadu government's plea against it. Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Shree Chandrashekhar stated that social backwardness cannot transfer from one religion to another post-conversion. This decision clarifies that reservation benefits are tied to the social order of the religion one currently belongs to, not their past affiliation.
