ओडिशा हाईकोर्ट ने आकाश महूरिया की 2017 में हिरासत में हुई मौत के मामले में तीन पुलिसकर्मियों की जमानत याचिका खारिज कर दी है। जस्टिस वी नरसिंह ने कहा कि हिरासत में होने का मतलब यह नहीं है कि वे संवैधानिक अधिकारों की अवहेलना करें, उन्होंने जोर देकर कहा कि अनुशासन की उम्मीद है, मौत की नहीं। अदालत ने जमानत न देने के कारणों में आरोपों की प्रकृति, मृतक के शरीर पर 24 चोटें और गवाहों के बयान का हवाला दिया। न्यायाधीश ने यह भी कहा कि मृतक के कथित आपराधिक इतिहास से जीवन के उसके मौलिक अधिकार को कम नहीं किया जा सकता, जो पूर्ववृत्त पर निर्भर नहीं है।
