Toddler Brain Activity Differs When Reading Books With Parents vs. Watching Videos

Times of India · science

A Northwestern University study found toddlers exhibit distinct brain activity associated with attention and social engagement when interacting with a parent during book reading, compared to watching a movie. Researchers tracked 49 toddlers aged 24-44 months using EEG caps, observing brain waves during story time and screen viewing. Alpha brain wave activity decreased while theta activity increased during social engagement, suggesting a different neural response. The findings highlight that a child's engagement is influenced by reciprocal interaction with another person, not just passive observation.
