The Gaganyaan mission will employ a multi-stage parachute system for safe crew module re-entry. This system includes pilot, drogue, and main parachutes, each with specific functions. Pilot chutes deploy larger ones, drogue chutes stabilize and reduce velocity, and main chutes ensure a gentle landing. This staged approach is crucial because deploying a full-sized parachute at high speeds of around 170 m/s could cause catastrophic failure or extreme deceleration for the crew.
