Louisiana Volunteers Use 200 Tons of Oyster Shells To Build Coastal Barrier
Times of India · environment
Volunteers in Louisiana have used 200 tons of discarded oyster shells to construct a 400-foot reef near Grand Bayou Indian Village. This project, completed in 2024, aims to protect the Indigenous community's coastline from erosion and rising sea levels. Monitoring two years later revealed a significant increase in live oyster density, jumping from 52 to 130 per square metre. This growth suggests the restored reef is effectively supporting oyster populations and contributing to coastal restoration efforts.
