Travancore Government Refused Longer Onam Holidays in 1930s

Old records reveal that the Travancore government in the 1930s denied demands to extend Onam holidays to 10 days, similar to Christmas breaks. Members of the Sri Mulam Assembly persistently raised the issue, arguing Onam was a major national festival. However, Chief Secretary Dr. N. Kunjan Pillai defended the government's stance, stating there were already a sufficient number of holidays annually. He also noted that year-end holidays were intended for officers' change, not solely for Christmas. This contrasts with the multi-day Onam holidays commonly taken for granted today.
