Bank of America Fined $1.2 Billion for Money Laundering Failings

BBC World · world

Bank of America has been fined $1.2 billion by the US Treasury Department for failing to detect and report over $5 billion in suspicious financial activity. A significant portion of this, $1 billion, posed risks to national security and illicit finance. These failures included not flagging transactions potentially linked to Chinese money laundering networks or trade-based laundering with ties to the US southwest border. The bank admitted to willfully violating the Bank Secrecy Act, leading to penalties from multiple regulatory bodies, including the OCC's largest ever fine.
