A BBC News investigation has revealed that a former Syrian general, Bassam al-Hassan, wanted for crimes against humanity, is being protected and financially supported by US and Lebanese authorities. Hassan, who oversaw Syria's chemical weapons program, is reportedly cooperating with the FBI and other US agencies by providing information about the 2012 abduction of American journalist Austin Tice. Syrian officials want Hassan returned for trial, but US authorities reportedly wish for him to remain in Lebanon. The Tice family expressed outrage, calling the arrangement aiding and abetting a war criminal.
