United Arab Emirates officials stated that the Omani co-pilot who allegedly attempted to hijack a Flydubai plane began a "drift towards extremism and terrorism" while studying in Australia. The 29-year-old pilot, reportedly inspired by al-Qaeda's 9/11 attacks, was allegedly trying to crash the plane into Tel Aviv's airport in a suicide attack. He wounded the captain with an emergency crash axe before passengers subdued him. The pilot had studied in Australia between 2015 and 2017, where he was influenced by radical ideology.
