Kashmir Shifts From Rice to Apples, Increasing Outside Food Dependence
Mongabay India · environment
Kashmir's agricultural landscape is undergoing a significant transformation as farmers increasingly replace paddy cultivation with high-value horticulture, particularly apple orchards. This shift is driven by the pursuit of higher financial returns compared to the modest earnings from rice farming. While economically beneficial for individual farmers, this trend is leading to a growing reliance on rice imported from other states. Experts highlight the critical need to balance farmers' economic interests with the imperative of maintaining sufficient rice production for regional food security and resilience against future climate risks.
